Professors’ expertise help shape new certificate program

By Brittany Dunnigan

China is more than a passion for Dr. Ruth Lumb. It’s her second home and classroom across the sea. Lumb, a marketing professor in the School of Business, is a bicontinental professor who has brought a bit of China to MSUM and will continue to do so with the Doing Business in China Certificate Program.

“My interest in the Chinese market began when I attended a conference in India three decades ago and learned that China did not have international relations with India,” Lumb said. Since then Lumb has made more than 40 trips to China.

“It’s been exciting to watch the Chinese market change over the past three decades. The attitudes of the people about markets and industry have evolved now that the government has accepted a less socialistic approach to business,” Lumb said. She’s taken business students to China nearly every spring for the past eight years to give them the same opportunity to witness China’s changing markets.

“I give them ‘hoof-it’ time so they can walk the streets and talk with the locals, being a part of the culture rather than a spectator of it. Then we share our stories,” she said. “I learn something new from my students during every trip.”

Doing Business in China Certificate Program

Lumb was instrumental in developing MSUM’s new Doing Business in China Certificate program. Four classroom courses and an educational trip to China will focus on China’s worldview while exploring the country’s rich history, economy and culture. Students and business professionals alike will gain understanding of China’s unique international business practices and implications of one of the world’s most populated countries.

“We must learn about the world beyond our borders,” Lumb said. “Since China’s market is continuing to grow, it’s important to understand its business objectives. That is why this program will be so beneficial.”

Faculty Experts Do Business in China
Ruth Lumb
Lumb has developed exchange programs in China at Chongqing Technology and Business University, where she helped set up the business school curriculum, and at Xi’an University of Science and Technology, where she is also a professor and conducts research. She has presented workshops for Ministry of Education and Ministry of Vocational Education, Federal Government of China, and was a partner in a Sino-U.S. joint venture.

Last fall she used virtual connections for her classes, allowing students and professors at Xi’an University to interact with MSUM students and professors and vice versa. These virtual connections will continue with students from the two countries working together on research, case studies, and feasibility projects.

Peter Geib
Dr. Peter Geib has spent more than 30 months living in China as well as 18 months living in Singapore with frequent travels to China. He is widely published in his principal research interest involving U.S. trade, investment and strategic management in transition economies, with particular interest in China. He has conducted more than 350 interviews with key influencers in business, government and academic organizations in China, leading to publication in nearly 50 peer-reviewed journals. Jerome Kuperman and Ruth Lumb Have Paper Accepted For Publication In The Academy of Marketing Studies Journal

The paper is titled “A Comparison of Perceptual Differences between First-Time and Repeat Visitors Traveling in China.”

Paper Abstract: Repeat visitors are different from first-time visitors because they are able to form a relational connection with a destination. Empirical research has largely focused on perception of destination attributes and not on whether a true relational connection has been formed between the repeat visitor and the destination. Visitors from both the United States and Europe were asked to complete a questionnaire while visiting China where they indicated their perception of similarity between their home country and China across a variety of variables consistent with those found in the psychic distance literature. This study found that there was no significant difference between repeat and first-time visitors raising questions as to the actual level of perceptual change and relational belongingness experienced by repeat visitors.

Exhibit on Native Nations in Minnesota and the History of Treaty Making Opens Sept. 22 at MSUM Library

September 22-October 10 |Livingston Lord Library | Second Floor
Library Hours

“Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations” is a new traveling exhibition that will explore the Native nations in Minnesota and their history of treaty making with the United States. The exhibit will open Sept. 22 in the Livingston Lord Library, second floor, where it will be on view through Oct. 10.

Annamarie Hill, Executive Director of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, is the featured speaker at the opening ceremony, Monday, Sept. 22 at 12:30 p.m. in Library 103. Her talk is entitled, “Creating and Sustaining Lasting Partnerships and Programs: How the ‘Why Treaties Matter’ Exhibit Came to Be.”

This exhibit is important, said Dr. Erma Vizenor, chairwoman of the White Earth Nation, because, “Treaties are the Supreme Law of this Country, therefore must be honored.”

Upcoming speakers
Speakers are being scheduled for the week after homecoming. Visit the Why Treaties Matter website for an updated list of guest speakers.

About the exhibit
In August 2010, a resolution creating a unique partnership of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. was approved unanimously by the tribes residing in Minnesota and made it possible for the exhibition to be developed as an educational tool for Minnesota audiences.

The exhibition will include 20 free standing banners with evocative text, historical and contemporary photographs and maps, and a 10-minute video titled, “A Day in the Life of the Minnesota Tribal Nations.”

This exhibit reveals how Dakota and Ojibwe treaties with the U.S. government affected the lands and lifeways of the Indigenous peoples of the place we now call Minnesota, and explains why these binding agreements between nations still matter today. It is meant to share important cultural information with all Minnesotans, that they may better understand the true circumstances surrounding Minnesota land, its use, and even the treatment of the land’s Indigenous peoples today.

“Treaties are agreements between self-governing, or sovereign, nations,” says Kevin Leecy, chairman of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe and chairman of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council. “Native Nations existed long before the formation of the United States. European powers recognized the sovereign status of Native Nations when they made treaties with us, as did the United States. Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution recognizes Indian Tribes as distinct sovereign entities on par with foreign nations.”

“In order to create the vibrant Minnesota of the future we need to understand the importance of the agreements—the treaties—between the sovereign Indian nations and the United States,” says Minnesota Humanities Center President David O’Fallon. “Understanding these treaties is important now—it affects how we live—and will shape the future. The Minnesota Humanities Center is honored and excited to be a partner in this important program.”

“The history of Indian treaties is the history of all Minnesotans and all Americans,” says Kevin Gover (Pawnee), director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. “Even now, states, Native nations, and the federal government continue to engage on a government-to-government basis every day, making in effect new treaties, building upon those made many years ago. We cannot have a complete understanding of what it means to be Americans without knowing about these relationships, whether we are Native Americans or not.”

“Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations” Why Treaties Matter is collaboration of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. This exhibition was developed with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 and The Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation. This tour is made possible by (TOUR-SPECIFIC CREDIT LINE).

Rodney and Carolyn Paseka have donated $5 million to Minnesota State University Moorhead’s School of Business. Located in the Center for Business, the school will be renamed the Paseka School of Business in honor of this generous gift.

The Paseka’s philanthropy will extend beyond the naming of the Paseka School of Business. The Rodney and Carolyn Paseka School of Business Endowment will provide support for students into perpetuity, with at least 80 percent of this endowment to be applied to scholarships for Paseka School of Business students.

Other uses for the remaining funds could include student/faculty research, student competitions, applied learning experiences, faculty positions and development, program development and speakers series.

Paskeas“The School of Business has a long history of excellence; many graduates from the business programs are in highly successful and visible careers,” said Dean Marsha Weber, College of Business and Innovation. “The School of Business is accredited by AACSB, the premier accrediting agency for business schools in the world. This generous gift will help us elevate our tradition of excellence in student-centered education, community service, and innovative programs.”

The Pasekas believe in the power of education to transform lives, and they have consistently demonstrated that philosophy by sponsoring annual scholarships in the School of Business and in Nursing. Both have been awarded to single mothers, as the Pasekas believe an education is the surest way to break the cycle of poverty.

“Rodney and Carolyn have been loyal supporters of MSUM for many years. This generous gift to the School of Business is historic and truly transformative,” said MSUM President Anne Blackhurst. “We are honored the Pasekas believe MSUM is worth their investment. Our students will benefit from their gift for years to come. Fostering partnerships and growing relationships is an important priority of my presidency, and the Paseka gift demonstrates the momentum and excitement we are building with our valued alumni and business leaders.”

Rodney and Carolyn Paseka

Both Rodney and Carolyn have strong ties to MSUM stretching back many years.

Rodney, a Georgetown, Minn., native and Moorhead High School graduate, earned MSUM degrees in Accounting and Business Administration in 1971 before beginning his career as a salesman with Can-Tex Industries. He joined Hebron Brick as sales manager in 1978, and in 1986, became one of three company owners and its Chief Executive Officer.

FullSizeRenderRodney is a visionary credited with transforming an aging manufacturing company in a mature industry and revitalizing it to become a top 10 percent brick plant in the country in terms of technology. Today, Hebron Brick is the only manufacturer of brick in North Dakota and one of the most successful brick companies in the Upper Midwest.

After Rodney became sole owner in 1999, he took a huge technological leap by becoming one of the first North Dakota companies to significantly use robotics. His leadership and vision brought Hebron Brick into the 21st century and catapulted the company from $4 million in sales annually to more than $40 million in sales annually in 2014.

Under Rodney’s leadership, Hebron Brick emerged as a nimble and specialized player in a market of competitors with massive resources. In addition to introducing robotics to the manufacturing plant, he directed efforts toward providing architectural products for commercial projects and developing new product lines to grow the business. The company’s ancient veins of extraordinary clay and state-of-the-art brick plant continue to yield a distinctive variety of colors and enable Hebron Brick Company to offer a wealth of options in fine brick.

His commitment to quality and adaptability has secured the future of this 111-year-old company, which in its history has survived bankruptcy, fire, two world wars and the Great Depression. Today, Hebron Brick thrives—with 80 percent of its brick distributed to 40 states and Canada, and with seven retail centers in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Learn more about Hebron Brick Company at thisbuiltamerica.com/north-dakota.

At 69, Rodney remains a dynamic CEO with an eye toward transforming the brick industry. He is an avid golfer and wine connoisseur.

Carolyn (nee Jacobson) is a Moorhead native and a graduate of Moorhead High School. She attended MSUM and also worked 10 years at Northwestern Bell before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She later began her career at MSUM as a senior clerk in the offices of Financial Aid, Affirmative Action, Philosophy and Publications. She retired from MSUM in 2001 after a 15-year career.

Carolyn is a volunteer with Heirlooms and enjoys Mahjong, book club, entertaining and photography.

Rodney and Carolyn married in 2001 and together have four children and four grandchildren. They are generous with their time and talent and are passionate world travelers, having visited all seven continents.
